24 December 2018

For an Organization like UNKLESA, the holiday season is the perfect time to reflect on the last year, celebrate our success, and plan for a brighter future. We take pride in that contribution that trailing families provide to the UN community.

This has been quite an extraordinary year for us. As we celebrated our families at the First Holiday Market, as we have added UNEP as an agency sponsor, as we have completed our highly anticipated interior renovation, as we are in process of adding UNDP to our Orientation Services, and implementing the first stage of our ambitious 2019 Strategic Blueprint.

The importance of the UNKLESA’s work – serving as a trusted platform, framing issues, and producing actionable ideas to focus on family support and a preparedness to challenge existing policies to advocate for bold decisions that champion resolutions to family issues within the UN system. We count on your support to help us identify the possible solutions to the complex challenges of our trailing families in the UN Community. Your support in 2019 is critical to our success, as we rely on you to help us frame issues and achieve a brighter future for UNKLESA.

At this joyous time of year, UNKLESA wishes you abundance, happiness, and peace in a new year filled with hope. I hope you and all your family, and friends have a lovely holiday season filled with joy and meaning.

I wish you a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year filled with all good things.

Best Regards,

David Taddele Dessie

Chair's Note - Welcome from the New Chair

1 November 2018

Today is my first day as the new Chairman of UNKLESA and I am excited to share with you my initial plans as I start my work as your new Chairman.

The most important thing is that I couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining the Executive Board. It’s an honor and a privilege to be asked to lead UNKLESA into a new chapter. The Board has many new initiatives in the works to both improve UNKLESA as an organization and to allows us to offer exemplary service to our existing and future members. I know periods of change can be unsettling, but we must take our destiny in our own hands and be absolutely focused on delivering the best possible experience for international UN families at the Nairobi duty station.

I am confident that our best years lie ahead of us and that together with the help of the 23 regional offices, UNON, UNEP, UN-Habitat and UNICIFE, we will continue to make Nairobi the best family duty station in the UN system by ensuring that all members of the family are supported throughout their stay.

The importance of trailing family support lies in its ability to balance the pace at which the entire family, not just the UN staff member, acculturates to their new duty station. With 14 years of family mobility knowledge, UNKLESA offers an opportunity, both in Nairobi and globally, to improve the existing family mobility mechanisms with solid data-driven innovative policy options; to help UN families move seamlessly across duty stations in a natural way; and receive assistance that understands their context, situation, and needs.

I promise to bring my relentless focus on family support and a preparedness to challenge existing policies to advocate for bold decisions that champion resolutions to family issues within the UN system. I look forward to working with you as UNKLESA strives to accomplish these goals and continues to be the most effective advocate for improving family mobility mechanisms within the UN system.
